Whether you’re insulating your ceiling, walls or underfloor (or all three!) there are several types of insulation to choose from. At G-Force, our first choice for insulation products is Earthwool® glasswool but we also install polyester insulation if that’s what you prefer.
So how do you know which one to choose?
Let’s take a look at the two types of insulation used in many NZ homes.
Before we begin, ask yourself:
- Where is the insulation going? e.g in the ceiling, walls or underfloor?
- What are the recommended R-values for the areas you are insulating?
R-values are important if you are renting out your property as the insulation will need to meet the healthy homes standard – you can read more about that HERE >>
If you’re retrofitting or building a new home, there are minimum insulation requirements set out in the New Zealand Building Code.

So which one is best? As we mentioned at the beginning, you’ll need to know where you want or need to install the insulation, and what R-value you want the installation to achieve. Other considerations may include:
- Indoor air quality impacts;
- Life cycle costs;
- Recycled content;
- Embodied carbon, and
- Ease of installation, especially if you plan to do the installation yourself. Some types of insulation require professional installation, while homeowners can easily handle others.
