Mould around your homes windows not only looks horrible but it can also cause health issues as mould spores can trigger allergies and respiratory problems.
So it’s important to prevent it from growing around your windows, especially in the bedroom where you sleep. In this blog, we’ll explore effective strategies to prevent and eliminate mould growth around your homes windows. But first, what casues it?
UNDERSTANDING WHAT CAUSES MOULD AROUND WINDOWS
Mould loves damp, humid conditions, making the areas around windows particularly susceptible.
Condensation: When warm, moist indoor air meets a cold window surface, it can lead to condensation. This moisture provides an ideal environment for mould growth.
Poor ventilation: Inadequate airflow can trap moisture in the window area, allowing mould to flourish.
Leaking windows: If your windows are not properly sealed or there are gaps in the frame, rainwater can seep in, again leading to mould growth.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON HOW TO STOP MOULD AROUND YOUR WINDOWS:
Ventilate your home regularly. This is one of the most important things you can do. Open your windows and doors for at least 10 minutes a day, even in winter! If you have a dehumidifier, run it in the rooms where mould is most likely to grow, such as the bathroom and kitchen. A lot of heat pumps also come with a dehumidifier option so running this first thing in the morning can help. Additionally, if you have a kitchen rangehood and/or bathroom ventialtion fan, run these for 10 minutes or so. And make sure when you’re showering or cooking, these are running to ensure steam is pushed out of the house.
Keep your windows clean. Wipe down the frames and sills with a damp cloth every week. This will help to remove any mould spores that may be present.
Fix leaks. If you have any leaks around your windows, fix them as soon as possible. Leaks will cause moisture to build up, which is a breeding ground for mould.
Add insulation: Insulation in the ceiling, walls and underfloor helps to keep your home warm, which reduces the amount of moisture that condenses on surfaces. Plus, it can also make your home more energy-efficient.
