WHY INSULATE?
A home that has good insulation such as ceiling and floor insulation, means a more comfortable home. Insulation will also help save money on power bills, as it will cost less to heat and cool.
The other benefits of insulating your home can include:
Reduction of noise levels;
Less condensation which means less mould and mildew providing a healthier environment if any of your family suffer from allergies as insulation helps discourage allergy-aggravating dust mites; and
Insulation provides a warmer home in winter and cooler in summer.
According to the Insulation Association of NZ:
“Insulating your home is the single most effective measure you can take to keep your home warm and to save money on energy bills. A well-insulated home will provide year-round comfort. Installing or even improving your insulation will increase the amount of heat kept inside your home meaning your home heats up quicker and requires less energy to stay warm, saving you money as a result. An un-insulated home uses up to 30% more energy to heat than one with correctly installed insulation. This makes insulation one of the smartest investments you can make in your home.”
KEEPING YOU WARMER IN WINTER
Insulation will slow the rate of heat loss through your ceiling, floors and walls, keeping your home warmer and saving you money on heating costs.
Industry figures state that without insulation, 30-35% of heat is lost through the ceiling, 12-14% through floors and 18-25% through your walls.
TYPES OF INSULATION
So what types of insulation are available?
Ceiling Insulation
Start from the top as your ceiling is where the greatest amount of heat loss occurs, so it makes sense to look at insulating this first.
Think of it like a blanket, ceiling insulation traps heat – keeping your home dry and warm in winter and cool in summer.
G-Force have a range of ceiling insulation options, in segments or rolls, to suit climates throughout the country.
Underfloor Insulation
Once you’ve insulated your ceilings, don’t let that heat escape from underneath the house.
If you have a timber floor in your home, chances are there is space underneath your floor that will allow us to fix insulation to the underside of the timber.
Insulating your underfloor will prevent heat loss and help eliminate draughts between floorboards, making your floor warmer to walk on in winter.

Ground Moisture Barrier
If your home has a crawl space or basement, and if you’ve got loose dirt, install a ground vapour barrier. This is a thick polythene sheeting installed on the ground under your house. It keeps moisture in the ground and stops air under the floor from getting damp.
Underfloor moisture is potentially the largest source of moisture in the home depending on the occupants habits. BRANZ research shows us that this could be up to 40 litres each day under a 100 square metre house!
Wall Insulation
For existing houses you need to open the wall however it might be worth retrofitting an older home for example:
R-value is a measurement of insulation’s effectiveness.
An uninsulated weatherboard wall is about R0.5.
If you take off the wall linings to install bulk insulation, you can lift this to about R1.8 – R2.4. source: genless.govt.nz
